Stone veneer gives a house or a wall the look of solid stone without building a full stone wall. It is a great way to cover an exposed concrete foundation, add stone to the front of a home, wrap a chimney or porch columns, or face an outdoor wall or kitchen. One of our recent projects is a fieldstone veneer wall, the kind of stone that matches the old walls found all over New England.
How long veneer lasts depends on what is behind it. On a house wall, that means a proper water-resistant barrier, metal lath and a scratch coat before the stone goes on, plus a way for moisture to escape at the bottom. On concrete or block, the surface has to be clean and prepared so the mortar bonds. Skipping these steps is why veneer loosens or traps water.
