Paver Driveways, done right.

A driveway carries the most weight of anything on your property: cars, delivery trucks and, in winter, a plow blade. A paver driveway handles that well when it is built right, and it adds curb appeal that asphalt cannot match. We install full paver driveways, and we also add granite cobblestone aprons and borders to existing asphalt drives, a popular upgrade around MetroWest. One of our real projects is a granite cobblestone strip set into an asphalt driveway entrance.

The base is everything. A driveway needs a deeper crushed stone base than a patio, compacted in layers, plus solid edge restraint so pavers do not spread under tire pressure. Interlocking pavers also flex slightly with frost instead of cracking like a slab, which is one reason they hold up well in New England.

Machado Landscaping & Construction Inc is family-owned, based in Marlborough, MA, with over 25 years of hands-on experience in construction. We work for homeowners and as the hardscape sub for builders and general contractors across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Full paver driveway, cobblestone apron or border

A full paver driveway replaces the whole surface and gives the biggest visual change. Pavers come in many colors and patterns; for driveways, thicker pavers and patterns that interlock well under turning tires are the usual choice.

If your asphalt is in decent shape, a granite cobblestone apron at the street or a cobblestone border along the edges gives a high-end look for a fraction of a full replacement. Granite cobblestone also holds up very well to plows and salt.

We walk you through these options during the free estimate, including what each one does to the look, the budget and the long-term maintenance.

Snowplows, road salt and drainage

Plows and snowblowers catch on loose edges, so we set edge restraint solidly and keep the finished surface even. If you use a plow service, tell us during the estimate so we can plan the edges and transitions with that in mind.

Road salt and de-icers are a fact of life here. Granite handles salt very well; concrete pavers vary, and we will tell you which de-icers are gentler on them. Driveways also have to shed a lot of water, so we pitch the surface away from the garage and the house and look at where the runoff ends up. If water already pools, a drainage solution such as a dry well can be part of the plan.

Keeping your property usable during the job

A driveway job affects how you get in and out of your home. We plan the work so you know when the driveway will be out of use, keep material neat, protect the lawn edges and clean up daily. At the end we sweep the surface, clean the street edge and walk the driveway with you.

It depends on size, base depth, removal of the old surface, material and access. As a rough market reference, paver driveways in New England often run about $20 to $50 per square foot installed. A cobblestone apron or border on an existing drive typically costs much less than a full replacement. Your free estimate gives the real number.
