Sudbury yards: history, stone and space
Sudbury is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts, and its history is part of the landscape. The town has several historic districts: the town center along Hudson and Concord Roads, the King Philip Historic District in south Sudbury, and the Wayside Inn Historic District in the west, around Longfellow's Wayside Inn, the oldest operating inn in the country. Old fieldstone walls run along roads and property lines all over town.
Away from the historic centers, most Sudbury homes are colonials and contemporaries on larger, wooded lots. Much of the northern half of town and the Hop Brook corridor are preserved open space and wetland, and the Sudbury River and Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge sit on the eastern side. That mix of big lots, stone and water shapes almost every hardscaping project here.
