Irrigation & Sprinkler Systems, done right.

Hand watering a Massachusetts lawn through July and August is a losing battle. Hot, dry stretches stress cool-season grass, and many towns set outdoor watering limits during dry summers, so the water you do use has to count. A well-planned sprinkler system puts the right amount of water in the right place, early in the morning, without anyone dragging a hose.

We install underground irrigation for new lawns, existing yards and new construction. Each zone is planned for what it waters: rotors for open lawn, sprays for smaller areas and drip lines for shrubs and planting beds. Sunny slopes and shaded corners get separate zones so one does not drown while the other dries out.

For builders and general contractors, we can install the system before final grading and sod or seed, so the yard is ready when the house is. For homeowners, we work around existing patios, walkways and gardens and restore the lawn where we trench.

What is included

  • Zone layout based on lawn, beds, sun, shade and slope
  • Trenching or pulling of supply lines with minimal lawn damage
  • Spray heads, rotors and drip lines matched to each area
  • Valves and valve boxes set at grade
  • Controller installation and first programming
  • Rain sensor option to skip watering after a storm
  • Head adjustment so water lands on lawn and beds, not the driveway
  • Turf and soil restored along trench lines
  • Walkthrough of the controller and the system

Planning a sprinkler system that waters evenly

Good irrigation starts on paper. We measure the lawn and beds, note sun and shade, slopes and soil, and check the water supply available at the house. That decides how many zones you need and what type of head goes where. Rotors throw water farther and slower, which suits larger lawns. Spray heads cover small or narrow areas. Drip lines water shrubs and gardens at the root with very little waste.

Connection to your water supply is planned with local requirements in mind. Some towns and water suppliers require a backflow device and inspection, and we go over what applies to your property during the estimate.

Fall winterization and spring start-up in New England

Water left in buried lines and heads can freeze and crack pipes, fittings and valves over a New England winter. Before the first hard freeze, it is common practice in our region to winterize the system, usually by blowing the lines out with compressed air, and then to start it back up and check every zone in spring.

We discuss fall winterization and spring start-up with you during the estimate, so you know what your system needs each year and how you want to handle it.

How we install irrigation

We mark the zones and head locations, locate any known utilities, then trench or pull the lines, install the valves and set each head at the right height. The controller goes in a convenient spot, usually in the garage or on an outside wall.

Before we leave, we run every zone, adjust heads so water stays off driveways, walkways and the house, restore the soil and turf along the trench lines and clean the work area. Then we show you how the controller works.

We trench in the lines, set valves, heads and the controller and run every zone. Then we restore the turf, clean up and walk you through the system.
