Worcester's hills make every lot a grading job
Worcester is called the City of Seven Hills for a reason. In neighborhoods like Vernon Hill, Grafton Hill and Tatnuck, houses sit above or below the street, front yards are short and steep, and the walk from the sidewalk to the door is usually a set of stairs. That is masonry work as much as landscaping: retaining walls to hold the front yard, stone or paver steps with proper risers, and a landing that drains.
Many of those front walls are decades old. Block or stone that is leaning toward the sidewalk, bulging in the middle or shedding pieces after each winter usually has a drainage problem behind it. Rebuilding with a compacted base, gravel backfill and a way for water to escape is what keeps a new wall standing.
