Paver Walkways, done right.

The walkway is the first thing guests step on and the path you use every day, in every season. A good one is wide enough for two people, has steps with an even rise, and stays flat and dry when the snow melts. We build paver walkways along the front of the house through the garden, side-yard paths to the backyard, and stone steps at the front entry tied into a paver walk.

We also build bluestone walkways in cut slabs. One of our recent projects is a bluestone slab walkway with stone chip joints and a granite cobblestone border, a look that fits older homes around MetroWest very well.

Machado Landscaping & Construction Inc is family-owned and based in Marlborough, MA, with over 25 years of hands-on experience in construction. We work for homeowners and as the hardscape sub for builders and general contractors across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Walkway materials and layout options

Concrete pavers are the most flexible choice: many colors, textures and laying patterns, and easy repair if one piece settles. Bluestone slabs give a natural, classic look and pair well with a bluestone patio. Granite cobblestone is often used as a border to frame the walk and keep the edges crisp.

Width matters more than most people think. A walk of about 4 feet lets two people walk side by side and makes room for snow shoveling. Gentle curves around planting beds usually look better than a straight line from the driveway to the door, and we lay out the path on site so you can see it before we dig.

Built for frost, snowmelt and shoveling

Walkways see the same frost heave as patios, plus constant traffic and shoveling. A compacted gravel base, solid edge restraint and joints that are filled properly keep pavers from shifting and edges from breaking off. On wet or clay soil we may increase the base depth.

Water should never sit on a walkway, because a puddle in December becomes ice. We pitch every walk so water runs off into the lawn or beds, not toward the house. For winter, we explain which de-icers are gentler on pavers and stone.

Entry steps and a clean finish

Many front walks end at steps. We build stone and paver steps with consistent riser heights, which is safer than uneven old steps. At the end, we sweep the walk, repair the lawn edges along the path, haul away debris and walk it with you.
